Common mistakes

  • You swing the dumbbells up with a hip bounce and shrug, so the traps and momentum lift the weight instead of the side delts.

  • You go above shoulder height with rotated-back palms, which just shifts the load off the delts.

  • You let the hands rise higher than the elbows, turning the raise into a forward-arm swing.

  • You drop the weights back down instead of lowering them for a slow count.

What to focus on

  • Choose a weight light enough that the reps look identical from first to last; the lateral raise rewards strictness over load.

  • Lead the movement with the elbows and think of pushing the dumbbells away from you, lengthening the arc.

  • Tilt the pinky slightly up at the top, as if pouring out a jug, to keep the side delt doing the work.
