Common mistakes

  • You jerk the bar off the floor instead of squeezing the slack out first, which yanks your back out of position.

  • You start with the hips too low and squat the weight, or too high and stiff-leg it.

  • You let the bar swing away from the shins so the weight pulls you forward.

  • You hitch or lean way back at lockout instead of just standing tall.

What to focus on

  • Wedge yourself into the bar: chest up, lats tight, back flat before anything leaves the floor.

  • Think of the pull as a leg press against the floor, not a lift with the arms and back.

  • Keep the bar in contact with your legs the entire way up and down.
