Common mistakes

  • You let the elbows drift apart and out as the set fatigues, turning the extension into a loose press.

  • You lower the dumbbells only halfway, stopping well above the head and skipping the stretch.

  • You move the whole upper arm back and forth to swing the weights up instead of extending at the elbow.

What to focus on

  • Keep the elbows pointing at the ceiling and no wider than your shoulders for the entire set.

  • Take advantage of the neutral grip to lower deep beside the head, feeling the triceps lengthen before you extend.

  • Lower slower than you lift; the dumbbells allow a deeper, safer stretch than a bar, so use it.
